Leading with Heart: Lessons from Cleo and Rob

This summer, I had the opportunity to meet many incredible leaders, but Cleo and Rob, our Executive Director and Associate of Operations, left the most lasting impression. Their presence alone could shift the energy in a room, they didn’t have to say much, yet their authenticity and warmth were always felt. Cleo, for instance, made a strong impact from day one. During our orientation, he not only explained the program's purpose and selection process but also took time to learn about each of us, our backgrounds, families, and passions. His attentiveness made us feel seen and valued. Rob, in a simple moment while asking me to help him carry water for a forum, offered a piece of advice that stuck with me: “If you see something good in someone, say it.” These weren’t just passing comments, they reflected the genuine and grounded nature of both leaders.
As the weeks went on, Cleo continued to offer wisdom in both serious and humorous ways. One moment that stood out was when he reminded us that being young doesn’t mean we have to delay living fully. This really hit home. I realized how much I’d been caught up in responsibilities and future planning, forgetting that I’m allowed to be young, to laugh, to make mistakes, and to truly enjoy the moment. His insights made me rethink how I approach relationships and whether I’ve been asking the right questions about the people I keep close.

What also deeply inspired me was their resilience. Cleo shared personal stories about his work with the Migrant and Seasonal Head Start programs, including doubts he faced, rejections, budget cuts, and moments when others underestimated him. Despite it all, he kept showing up. I especially respected how open he was about feeling nervous before a big speech. Rather than keeping it to himself, he chose to share it with those close to him and even spoke about it publicly. That honesty made me respect him even more. It reminded me that leadership isn’t about perfection; it’s about humanity, persistence, and staying true to your purpose even in the face of challenges.
Because of Cleo and Rob, I now see leadership as something both serious and lighthearted. It’s about empathy, honesty, and being yourself. They’ve inspired me to continue my education, lead with integrity, and bring my full self into every space I enter.
